Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men. Importantly men may remain asymptomatic until later stages of the disease. It is important however, to become familiar with prostate cancer symptoms. These symptoms are not definitive and may be symptoms of a related condition. The information presented here is intended to be informative and should not replace assessment by an expert clinician.

Symptoms of Advanced Prostate Cancer

Advanced prostate cancer has the most definitive symptoms. These symptoms may be present alongside general symptoms. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is recommended that you inform a clinician as soon as possible.

Symptoms

  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Pain during urination or ejaculation
  • Lower back or pelvic pain
  • Bone pain
  • Unexpected weight loss

General Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

Less advanced prostate cancer may still cause some men to experience symptoms. These symptoms typically have a lot of overlap with other related conditions. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is recommended that you discuss them with an expert clinician. Discussion with an expert in prostate cancer will help to differentiate between prostate cancer and other possible conditions.

Symptoms

  • Difficulty passing urine
  • An interrupted or slow flow of urine
  • The need to urinate frequently including during the night (nocturia)
  • Incontinence
  • Discomfort when urinating

Symptoms of Early Prostate Cancer

Early prostate cancer is typically asymptomatic. Many prostate cancers remain localised in the early stages. Detection of these cancers, and determination of their risk and the need to intervene is only possible through a comprehensive clinical analysis. This analysis should be personalised to the individual seeking testing.

Also referred to as prostate enlargement, BPH is a non cancerous enlargement of the prostate. As the prostate grows it may put pressure on the urethra or bladder which is why it is associated with numerous urinary symptoms.

  • Inability to completely empty the bladder

  • The need to urinate frequently
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain or pressure in the lower abdomen

Prostatitis

Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate. It can be both acute and chronic and has multiple sub-classifications. It can be caused through infection, injury or an immune system disorder. Determination of the correct type of prostatitis and the appropriate treatment requires medical diagnosis.

Symptoms

  • Pain when urinating or ejaculating
  • Difficulty Urinating
  • The need to urinate frequently including during the night (nocturia)

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. Over 19,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in Australia in 20191. New testing and analysis technology means more men are able to have their cancer detected early. While a diagnosis requires clinical testing, these risk factors that can increase a man’s chances of developing prostate cancer.

Risk Factor 1: Age

The most important risk factor for prostate cancer is age. Most prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over 502. Most men will experience enlargement of the prostate as they age. This enlargement is natural and may cause similar symptoms or changes to the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). This is why testing with an expert clinician is so important.

Those men who have a known family history of prostate cancer may consider testing at 40. Men with no known family history or other risk factors may consider regular testing from the age of 50.

Risk Factor 2: Race

While the exact genetic causes of prostate cancer are not yet known, men of African descent are known to have an increased risk of prostate cancer3. Men of African descent or mixed race including African descent should inform their clinician of this fact when discussing prostate cancer testing.

Risk Factor 3: Family History

Family history and genetics can play a big role in a man’s risk of prostate cancer. Having a father or brother who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer will more than double your risk. This makes testing for these men even more important. Having more than one can increase your risk even further.

Having a mother or sister with breast cancer can also increase your risk. Those men who had a brother or father die of prostate cancer younger than 60 have an even greater increased risk.

Men with a family history should consider regular testing. They should also ensure they are working with a expert clinician who understands the influence of family history on prostate cancer.

What to do if you are at risk?

Prostate cancer is common. It will effect 1 in 6 men in their lifetime. Even with an increased risk, early detection is possible. Discussing your risk factors with an expert clinician is the best path to early detection.
