The prostate is a small gland, roughly the size of a walnut, that forms part of the male reproductive system. It sits just below the bladder.
Prostate cancer is when cells in the prostate grow abnormally. These cells tend to grow more rapidly than regular prostate cells which is what forms a tumor of the prostate.
If these cells break away from the prostate they can spread to other parts of the body. This is known as metastasis and signals late stage prostate cancer, outcomes at this stage are poor.
Symptoms typically aren’t seen until later stages of prostate cancer.
